Out of Towners
If your planning on coming to Monochrome from out of town, here's some unsolicited advice and recommendations.
Travel
Both venues are within a 30 minute walk of either the train station or the coach station.
If you're coming from London it should be possible to day-trip the Saturday without missing the headliners. The curfew at Strange Brew is 10pm, with the last train heading back to London at 10.30pm. It's a 20 minute walk, so totally doable if you don't faff about.
Alternatively, come to the after party at The Gryph, and saunter to the Coach station to pick up the first set of wheels out of Bristol at 4am (if you do this, I'll buy you a pint).
Food
Friday
Moor Beer may be in an industrial estate but it's only a 3 minutes walk from Old Market, which has a decent spread of pubs and restaurants.
Vegans would do well to check out Fi Real; a plant based Caribbean gaff. It's not too expensive and its tasty, hearty stuff. It might not sound very appetising but I recommend the "Jamaican curry chunks".
Next door is Tomo No Raman and at the bottom of Old Market there's Chido Way Mexican. They're both a bit more upmarket, and need booking in advance, but it's good gear.
Alternatively there's a bunch of standard grey-matter kebab/pizza places. I couldn't tell you which one's best so roll the dice.
Saturday
Strange Brew is in the center of town so you've got loads of options.
If you're around for lunch there's a couple of traditional Chinese places nearby Strange Brew that are worth a look (but are, predictably hopeless/perilous for vegans). A lot of people swear by Fresh Bakery but personally I like Sai Kung Cafe. Cheap, big portions, and their Mapu Tofu is fucking delicious (if you're unfamiliar, despite the name, it's definitely not vegan).
Also for lunch there's a Kurdish wrap place in St Nick's market called Matina. The queue can get pretty insane but the wraps are worth it. A Bristol institution.
If you need something quick in between bands then the Eat a Pitta van around the corner from Strange Brew does pretty good falafel. Their bread is always a bit stale so you're better off getting a box - they are hefty so you won't leave hungry.
Oh and don't end up at Mimas; they'll give you a kebab the size of fish finger and if you're really lucky, a bought of explosive diarrhea.
Boozers
Friday
The venue is a tap room so there's great beer at decent prices there already. But if you're looking to get a drink in before they open then just around the corner is The Barley Mow. Really nice pub with a good range of craft/trad ales.
Or if you're looking to save a few quid, give The Long Bar a go. Prices, drink options, decor and patrons all transported from 1998.
Saturday
You're basically in the center of town so most of the pubs are shit. If you're desperate to sneak a pint in before Strange Brew opens however then The Bank is open from 12, it's really close, and you could do a lot worse.
And of course, when Strange Brew kicks out you will be heading straight to The Gryphon - Bristol's dedicated metal pub, and hosts of our official afters. It was an absolute blast last year so don't skip it!
Record Shops
Together with The Gryphon, Black City Records combine to form Bristol's "metal quarter". I'm not about to start questioning whether 2 businesses can constitute a "quarter", but what I am going to do is to tell you to get yourself down their and buy some wax. Dedicated metal record shop and pillar of the community.
